1947
The very first NHL All Star Game was played on this date in Toronto. Red Wings participants in the inaugural event were Ted Lindsay, Jack "Black Jack" Stewart and Bill Quackenbush. The game was played at the beginning of the season because it featured the All Stars from the league playing the Stanley Cup champs of the previous season. The All Starts won the first game over the Maple Leafs 4-3.
1954
Right Winger Bill “Whip” Lochead was born on this day in Forest, Ontario. Lochead played 296 games for the Red Wings during the seasons of 1974 to 1979. During his time with Detroit the Whip scored 65 goals and 60 assists for 125 points.
