1946 J. P. Leblanc was born on this date in South Dutham, Quebec. Leblanc played at center for the Red Wings from 19775 to 1979. During his time with Detroit, Leblanc played 147 games, scoring 13 goals along with 28 assists for 41 points.

1977 The Red Wings made a trade with the New York Islanders to acquire Andre St. Laurent. Detroit sent Michel Bergeron to the Islanders to complete the exchange. St. Laurent had a very productive season scoring 31 goal along with 39 assists for a total of 70 points. His production tailed off the following year with 18 goals and 31 assists. After that St Laurent would journey around the NHL and even the CHL until he returned to the Red Wings in 1983 to play in 19 games.

The Detroit hockey franchise changed it's name from the Cougars to the Falcons.

1966

Gordie Howe began his 21st NHL season setting a new record for longevity in the league. He previously shared the record with Dit Clapper and Bill Gadsby.

1984

The Red Wings acquired Darryl Sittler in a trade with Philadelphia. The players that Detroit sent to the Flyers for this exchange were Murray Craven and Joe Patterson.

The Detroit Red Wings signed amateur Ted Lindsay to his first pro contract.

1991

The Red Wings acquired goalie Vincent Riendeau in a trade with St. Louis. Detroit sent defenseman Rick Zombo to the Blues.

2007

Aaron Downey and Kyle McLaren of the San Jose Sharks trade a couple of nice blows.

1984

The wars between Detroit and Toronto in the mid-1980s were great battles. The teams were bitter rivals back then and it showed in the fights. Bob Probert had two on this date. Including this marquee matchup against Wendel Clark.



1986

The Red Wings mad a trade with Edmonton. Detroit acquired Todd Bidner from the Oilers in exchange for Rejean Cloutier.

1991

Vladimir Konstantinov recorded his first NHL point. Konstantinov's point came in an assist during a 6-3 Red Wings victory against St. Louis.

1964

The Red wings traded to bring Ted Lindsay back to the team. Detroit traded Lindsay away to Chicago back in 1957. This time they re-acquired him with cash going Chicago's way.

1984

Reed Larson became the Red Wings highest scoring defenseman in Red Wings history. He surpassed Red Kelly by scoring an assist in a game against Buffalo. The current holder of that record is of course, Nick Lidstrom.

2010

Mike Modano played his first game as a visitor at Dallas' American Airlines Center. During his one season with the Red Wings, Modano played against the organization he spent over 20 years with. Over 18,000 fans packed the American Airlines Center to welcome Modano back. The Stars have not been drawing nearly that many fans lately. Before his first shift, fans gave Modano a standing ovation as a message of "Thank You, Mike" flashed on the overhead screen.

1947

The very first NHL All Star Game was played on this date in Toronto. Red Wings participants in the inaugural event were Ted Lindsay, Jack "Black Jack" Stewart and Bill Quackenbush. The game was played at the beginning of the season because it featured the All Stars from the league playing the Stanley Cup champs of the previous season. The All Starts won the first game over the Maple Leafs 4-3.

1954

Right Winger Bill “Whip” Lochead was born on this day in Forest, Ontario. Lochead played 296 games for the Red Wings during the seasons of 1974 to 1979. During his time with Detroit the Whip scored 65 goals and 60 assists for 125 points.

2006

Brad Norton was our enforcer for hire that year, he took on his counterpart in Buffalo Andrew Peters.

1940

Left Winger Larry Jeffrey was born in Goderich, Ontario. Jeffrey played 170 games for Detroit during the seasons of 1961 to 1965. During that time he scored 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points.

1996

The Red Wings helped to open Buffalo's new Maine Midland Arena on this date. They made sure the building opened poorly for the Sabers by beating them soundly by a score of 6 - 1.

2007

Dallas Drake began that Stanley Cup winning season on tear. This is was his third fight in the month of October.



2010
