Birthdays!

1906 Herbie Lewis (1928-39) was born on this day in Calgary, Alberta. Knicknamed the "The Duke of Duluth" this former Red Wing left winger played 483 games for Detroit and scored 148 goals, 161 assists for 309 points. Lewis was a member of the 1936 and 1937 Stanley Cup teams. He was later inducted in to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.

1943 Dennis Hextall (1975-79) was born on this day in Poplar Point, Manitoba. The former Red Wing center played 193 games for Detroit and scored 39 goals, 82 assists for 121 points and had 457 penalty minutes.

1951 Borje Salming (1989-90) was born on this day in Kiruna, Sweden. One of the greatest Sweedish players ever, the defenceman spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In an effort to bring some star players to the Red Wings, then General Managaer Jimmy Devallano sinded Salming to play one more season. Salming skated in 49 games, scored two goals and 17 assists for 19 points. He was inducted in to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996.

1954 The Red Wings won their sixth Stanley Cup. Tony Leswick scored the winning goal in overtime of game seven to defeat the Montreal Canadiens.

Birthdays! Former Red Wing (2000-04) Boyd Devereaux was born on this day in Seaforth, Ontario. Devereaux was a member of the 2002 Stanley Cup team. During his tenure with Detroit, Devereaux played 256 games and scored 23 goals, 40 assists for 63 points.

1937 Wings goalie Earl Robertson pitched his second consecutive shutout as the Detroit Red Wings repeated as Stanley Cup Champions. Also in this game, Robertson stopped the first penalty shot called in a Stanley Cup Final. Robertson stopped Alex Shibicky of the New York Rangers

1952 Terry Sawchuk completed a sweep of the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Final. In the game, goaltender Terry Sawchuk pitched his fourth shutout in eight playoff games.

Birthdays! Former Red Wing center Jim McFadden (1946-51) was born in 1920 in Belfast, Ireland. McFadden played 253 games for Detroit and scored 64 goals, 78 assists for 142 points and was a member of the 1950 Stanley Cup team.

April 18th

1994Darren McCarty scored his first playoff goal. 1994 was McCarty's rookie year. The goal came against the San Jose Sharks in a first round playoff game.

2008 From the Stanley Cup year. Johan Franzen scores an overtime winner against the Nashville Predators to give the Red Wings a 32 lead in the series.
